Ammonium nitrate – active ingredient (nitrogen) content 34-35%. The chemical formula is NH4NO3. In ammonium nitrate, 50% of nitrogen is in the ammonium form (NH4+) and 50% in the nitrate form (NO3-), which is well absorbed by the root systems of plants. The fertilizer is used for pre-sowing fertilization (applied before pre-sowing cultivation) and for root feeding of crops. It is not recommended to use the fertilizer as the main fertilizer (e.g. for plowing), as the nitrate form of nitrogen (NO3-) is not fixed by the soil and is easily washed out of it. There is no need to incorporate ammonium nitrate into the soil, as the nitrogen from the fertilizer does not leach out. Later, under favorable conditions, part of the ammonium nitrogen (NH4+) is converted into nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-) forms of nitrogen, which are readily available to plants. This type of fertilizer is absolutely universal and can be used on any soil. At the same time, you should keep in mind that depending on the type of soil, you may need to add some other types of fertilizers. For example, while on buffer or alkaline soils, you can use ammonium nitrate without any restrictions, when cultivating acidic soils, you will need to use nitrate in combination with lime flour in equal proportions.

Application

Two types of soil treatment are most popular: the first one uses ammonium nitrate as fertilizer, and the second one as fertilizer. The difference is often in the amount of fertilizer that a farmer needs for a particular type of tillage.

The use of ammonium nitrate for basic soil cultivation (fertilization) involves the consumption of 3 centners of material per 1 hectare of cultivated land. The application of ammonium nitrate as a top dressing involves the use of 1 to 2 centners of fertilizer per 1 hectare of soil. It should also be noted that the use of ammonium nitrate is particularly effective for fertilizing winter wheat and rye in early spring. However, fertilizing conventional grain crops will also allow you to significantly increase yields. The highest effect is achieved when ammonium nitrate is applied together with phosphorus and potassium.

Under no circumstances should ammonium nitrate be used as a fertilizer for plants such as zucchini, squash, cucumbers and pumpkins. The use of nitrate in this case will contribute to the accumulation of nitrates in vegetables.
